Who Needs a Reconstructive Dentist?
Anyone who is unhappy with the way his or her teeth look could benefit from the services of a reconstructive dentist. This person is an oral professional who specializes in treating a host of dental issues that can lead to teeth becoming deformed, misaligned, broken, fractured, or discolored.
Reconstructive dentistry is often likened to cosmetic dentistry given the fact both fields deal with many similar issues.
The appearance of a person's teeth can significantly affect the way he or she feels. People with unhealthy looking teeth tend to be less confident than those with a great set of teeth. That is not particularly surprising given the condition of a person's teeth are one of the first things people notice during interactions. Who wants to be the person whom others are always making jokes about the appearance of their teeth?
Common dental issues commonly addressed by a reconstructive dentist include:
- A missing tooth
- Missing more than six teeth
- Missing all of the natural teeth
- Short-looking teeth
- Teeth that have visible signs of wear
- Teeth that have lost their original color, shape, and appearance
- Shifting teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Patients who have been diagnosed with anorexia, bulimia, or acid reflux disease. These people often have teeth that have been severely damaged by stomach acids
- People with jaws that make clicking or popping sounds
- Patients interested in alternatives to dentures
- Poorly-shaped teeth
- Defective teeth
Here are a few dental procedures that are often performed by a reconstructive dentist:
Braces
Braces are commonly used by dentists to address teeth and bite alignment issues. The most affordable types of braces are the traditional ones, and these are also the most effective. However, many patients, especially adults, are not comfortable with the idea of having a highly visible metal device in their mouth.
Other types of braces can be used to help a patient to realign teeth discretely. The most popular ones are clear braces. These prosthetics have been proven to be almost as effective as metal braces, but they are barely visible inside the patient's mouth. Also, clear braces can be easily removed for meals and cleaning, making them easier to live with on a day to day basis.
All types of braces work using the same principle: the device applies constant pressure on the wearer's teeth, gradually pushing it into place.
With clear braces, the patient is given a series of mouth-guard-like braces to wear, each worn for around two weeks. Once the duration is over, the brace is replaced with another. Each tray in the series pushes the wearer's teeth closer to the desired position.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are the most effective way to replace missing teeth. There are cheaper options like dentures and bridges, but these do not address the bone tissue loss that is associated with missing teeth. Implants serve as an artificial teeth roots, and it helps to prevent bone tissue loss.
Implants are just like natural teeth, and there is no adjustment period. Also, cleaning an implant is no different from cleaning real teeth.
