Most Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic issues affect patients of all ages. Treatment is particularly important for teens because addressing such problems early can prevent further issues down the line. Parents should be hyper-aware of their pre-teens and teens’ dental problems. Orthodontists can also help adults plagued by their own unique issues.

Common orthodontic problems

Overjetting or protruding teeth

Protruding teeth are similar to overbites, detailed below. Protrusions are more likely to occur with upper teeth as opposed to lower teeth. The orthodontist’s treatment plan for protruding teeth is designed to encourage the jaw to grow in unison with the teeth. Furthermore, this treatment approach aligns the bite and teeth to boot. Protruding teeth that are not properly treated will eventually result in lower teeth that grow well beyond the normal size. Especially large lower teeth will cause issues with the top of the mouth as time progresses.

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth are one of the more common orthodontic issues. Such crowding occurs when the mouth lacks ample room for the teeth. In most cases, crowded teeth are the result of the jaw being too small to keep the teeth in the proper positions. Orthodontic treatment should be applied right away, as overcrowded teeth ramp up the odds of tooth decay and additional dental health problems.

An open bite

Open bites occur when the jaw and teeth do not meet properly. They make it challenging to chew or create an abundance of force and even have the potential to damage other teeth.

Missing lateral incisors

Most patients are surprised to learn that missing lateral incisors are a common orthodontic issue. Missing lateral incisors are exactly as they sound; these teeth are simply not in the mouth. Braces can correct this issue to shift teeth to the ideal spaces. Lateral incisors are subsequently replaced with dental implants.

Overbite

An overbite is the protrusion of the upper teeth or even the jaw over the lower row of teeth. This condition is quite common and can cause problems, making the chewing process more difficult. Overbites should be treated when the patient is a teenager. Early treatment makes it easier to correct the issue and set the stage for beautiful, healthy teeth in the years to come. Furthermore, it takes less time to correct an overbite when the patient is a teen as opposed to an adult.

Crossbites

Crossbites develop when the upper row of teeth fit along the inside portion of the lower teeth. This positioning is the opposite of what it should be. The upper teeth should always extend over the lower teeth.
