How Quickly Do Invisalign Aligners Produce Results?

Invisalign aligners can help patients quickly see results. Many patients will begin to see noticeable results within six weeks of beginning treatment. However, your results will depend on the state of your teeth before treatment, as well as how well you follow the instructions. For example, a patient with a minor case may begin to see results within two weeks. Another thing to keep in mind is that each set of aligners moves the teeth slightly, whether or not a patient can tell.
How Invisalign works
To create the Invisalign aligners, the dentist will take images and models of the patient’s face and teeth. These include photographs, X-rays and impressions. The dentist will send these records to the Invisalign company with a set of detailed instructions on how to move the teeth.
At the Invisalign company, a technician will scan the impressions into a computer, allowing them to work with a 3-D image. The technicians will work to move the teeth with a step-by-step process. The dentist will then review the images, making adjustments as necessary. The company will create each set of aligners and send the entire set to the office.
Each set of the Invisalign aligners is worn for two weeks at a time. Each time the patient finishes one set of aligners, the teeth are about 1/10 mm straighter than before. So, after six weeks, the teeth will have moved about 6/10 mm, which is generally enough for patients to start noticing results.
Tracking progress
Because the Invisalign aligners move the teeth very slowly, it can be helpful for patients to track progress each week. This can help patients stay motivated. One way to track progress is to take a photo before starting a new set of aligners. This can help patients see changes more easily.
If this does not help patients see results after six weeks, they should know that it may take longer for noticeable results. For example, many orthodontic treatments address minor problems before moving on to the more complicated ones. This helps set a strong foundation for the treatment.
Tips for Invisalign
A good way for patients to see the results is by wearing the aligners consistently. Patients should wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Wearing the aligners more can further speed treatment. If pain is making it unpleasant to wear the aligners for so many hours, patients can use over-the-counter pain-relieving medications. Patients should use any rubber bands or other dental appliances as recommended.
