What Is a Dental Restoration?

This type of denture attaches to the remaining natural teeth with metal clasps. Full dentures are an option when all the teeth need to be replaced. Typically composed of acrylic resin, certain types of dentures feature metal attachments to help keep them in place.  

Implants

The solution for missing teeth most closely resembling the natural tooth structure is a dental implant. Because it uses a small post generally made from titanium inserted into the jawbone to act as a root, an implant can prevent bone loss in the jawbone. Once the implant has fused to the jawbone, a crown is attached to the post using a small mental rod called an abutment. The amount of time it takes for the implant to fuse with the jawbone, as well as the time involved with the gums healing from having the abutment placed, can be extensive. Some implants can require a year to complete from start to finish.

Dental professionals have many treatments available to make dental restoration possible. However, it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene. Each time a restorative procedure is performed, at least part of the natural teeth must be removed. As more procedures are performed over time, more enamel will be removed from the remaining teeth. To avoid needing to completely remove the natural teeth, brushing at least twice daily and flossing is vital.
